1 John 1:5-2:2
Light and Darkness, Sin and Forgiveness
5 This is the message we have heard from
him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all.
6 If we claim to have fellowship with him and
yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the
light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son,
purifies us from all sin.
8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive
ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9 If
we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and
purify us from all unrighteousness. 10 If
we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not
in us.
2 My dear children, I write this
to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate
with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. 2 He
is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the
sins of the whole world.
Psalm 124:2-5, 7-8
2 if the Lord had not been on our side
when people attacked us,
3 they would have swallowed us alive
when their anger flared against us;
4 the flood would have engulfed us,
the torrent would have swept over us,
5 the raging waters
would have swept us away.
when people attacked us,
3 they would have swallowed us alive
when their anger flared against us;
4 the flood would have engulfed us,
the torrent would have swept over us,
5 the raging waters
would have swept us away.
7 We have escaped
like a bird
from the fowler’s snare;
the snare has been broken,
and we have escaped.
8 Our help is in the name of the Lord,
the Maker of heaven and earth.
from the fowler’s snare;
the snare has been broken,
and we have escaped.
8 Our help is in the name of the Lord,
the Maker of heaven and earth.
Matthew 2:13-18
The Escape to Egypt
13 When they had gone, an angel of the Lord
appeared to Joseph in a dream. “Get up,” he said, “take the child and his
mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to
search for the child to kill him.”
14 So he got up, took the child and his mother
during the night and left for Egypt, 15 where
he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled what the Lord had said
through the prophet: “Out of Egypt I called my son.”
16 When Herod realized that he had been
outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys
in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance
with the time he had learned from the Magi. 17 Then
what was said through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled:
18 “A voice is
heard in Ramah,
weeping and great mourning,
Rachel weeping for her children
and refusing to be comforted,
because they are no more.”
weeping and great mourning,
Rachel weeping for her children
and refusing to be comforted,
because they are no more.”
