FIRST READING: A Reading from the Book of Isaiah (Isaiah
58:7-10)
7 Is it not to
share your food with the hungry
and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter—
when you see the naked, to clothe them,
and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?
8 Then your light will break forth like the dawn,
and your healing will quickly appear;
then your righteousness will go before you,
and the glory of the Lord will be your rear guard.
9 Then you will call, and the Lord will answer;
you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I.

darkness light dawns for the upright,
for those who are gracious and compassionate and righteous.

2 And so it was with me, brothers
and sisters. When I came to you, I did not come with eloquence or human wisdom
as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God. 2 For
I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him
crucified. 3 I came to you in weakness
with great fear and trembling. 4 My
message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a
demonstration of the Spirit’s power, 5 so
that your faith might not rest on human wisdom, but on God’s power.

Salt and Light
13 “You are the salt of the earth. But if
the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer
good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.
14 “You are the light of the world. A town
built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither
do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its
stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In
the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good
deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.
O God, seeing you are so infinitely lovable, why have you given us but
one heart to love you, and this so little and so narrow?
