1 John 3:7-10
7 Dear children, do not let anyone lead you
astray. The one who does what is right is righteous, just as he is righteous.
8 The one who does what is sinful is of the
devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the
Son of God appeared
Psalm 98:1, 7-9
1 Sing to the Lord a new song,
for he has done marvelous things;
his right hand and his holy arm
have worked salvation for him.
for he has done marvelous things;
his right hand and his holy arm
have worked salvation for him.
7 Let the sea
resound, and everything in it,
the world, and all who live in it.
8 Let the rivers clap their hands,
let the mountains sing together for joy;
9 let them sing before the Lord,
for he comes to judge the earth.
He will judge the world in righteousness
and the peoples with equity.
the world, and all who live in it.
8 Let the rivers clap their hands,
let the mountains sing together for joy;
9 let them sing before the Lord,
for he comes to judge the earth.
He will judge the world in righteousness
and the peoples with equity.
John 1:35-42
John’s Disciples Follow Jesus
35 The next day John was there again with
two of his disciples. 36 When he saw
Jesus passing by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God!”
37 When the two disciples heard him say
this, they followed Jesus. 38 Turning
around, Jesus saw them following and asked, “What do you
want?”
They said, “Rabbi” (which means “Teacher”), “where are you
staying?”
39 “Come,” he
replied, “and you will see.”
So they went and saw where he was staying, and they spent
that day with him. It was about four in the afternoon.
40 Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one
of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus. 41 The first thing Andrew did was to find his
brother Simon and tell him, “We have found the Messiah” (that is, the Christ).
42 And he brought him to Jesus.
Jesus looked at him and said, “You
are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas”
(which, when translated, is Peter).
It often happens that we pray God to deliver us from some dangerous
temptation, and yet God does not hear us but permits the temptation to continue
troubling us. In such a case, let us understand that God permits even this for
our greater good. When a soul in temptation recommends itself to God, and by
His aid resists, O how it then advances in perfection.
