FIRST READING: A Reading from the Book of Leviticus (Leviticus
19:1-2, 17-18)
Various Laws
19 The Lord said to Moses, 2 “Speak
to the entire assembly of Israel and say to them: ‘Be holy because I, the Lord your God, am holy.
17 “‘Do not hate a fellow Israelite in your
heart. Rebuke your neighbor frankly so you will not share in their guilt.
18 “‘Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge
against anyone among your people, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the Lord.
RESPONSORIAL PSALM (Psalm 103:1-4, 8,
10, 12-13)
Of David.
1 Praise the Lord, my soul;
all my inmost being, praise his holy name.
2 Praise the Lord, my soul,
and forget not all his benefits—
3 who forgives all your sins
and heals all your diseases,
4 who redeems your life from the pit
and crowns you with love and compassion,
all my inmost being, praise his holy name.
2 Praise the Lord, my soul,
and forget not all his benefits—
3 who forgives all your sins
and heals all your diseases,
4 who redeems your life from the pit
and crowns you with love and compassion,
8 The Lord is compassionate and gracious,
slow to anger, abounding in love.
10 he does not treat us as our sins deserve
or repay us according to our iniquities.
12 as far as the east is from the west,
so far has he removed our transgressions from us.
slow to anger, abounding in love.
10 he does not treat us as our sins deserve
or repay us according to our iniquities.
12 as far as the east is from the west,
so far has he removed our transgressions from us.
13 As a father has
compassion on his children,
so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him;
so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him;
SECOND READING: A Reading from the Book of Corinthians (1 Corinthians
3:16-23)
16 Don’t you know that you yourselves are
God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst? 17 If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy
that person; for God’s temple is sacred, and you together are that temple.
18 Do not deceive yourselves. If any of you
think you are wise by the standards of this age, you should become “fools” so
that you may become wise. 19 For the
wisdom of this world is foolishness in God’s sight. As it is written: “He
catches the wise in their craftiness”; 20 and
again, “The Lord knows that the thoughts of the wise are futile.” 21 So then, no more boasting about human leaders!
All things are yours, 22 whether Paul
or Apollos or Cephas or the world or life or death or the present or the future—all
are yours, 23 and you are of Christ,
and Christ is of God.
GOSPEL: A Reading from the Holy Gospel According to Matthew
(Matthew 5:38-48)
Eye for Eye
38 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye
for eye, and tooth for tooth.’ 39 But I
tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek,
turn to them the other cheek also. 40 And
if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well.
41 If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with
them two miles. 42 Give to the one who
asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.
Love for Enemies
43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love
your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ 44 But
I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 that you may be children of your Father in heaven.
He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the
righteous and the unrighteous. 46 If you
love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax
collectors doing that? 47 And if you
greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even
pagans do that? 48 Be perfect,
therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
Poor human reason, when it
trusts in itself, substitutes the strangest absurdities for the highest divine
concepts.
