Psalm 86:1-6
Mark 5:21-43
2 Samuel 18:9-10, 14, 24-25, 30 - 19:3
9 Now Absalom happened to meet David’s men.
He was riding his mule, and as the mule went under the thick branches of a
large oak, Absalom’s hair got caught in the tree. He was left hanging in
midair, while the mule he was riding kept on going.
10 When one of the men saw what had
happened, he told Joab, “I just saw Absalom hanging in an oak tree.”
14 Joab said, “I’m not going to wait like
this for you.” So he took three javelins in his hand and plunged them into
Absalom’s heart while Absalom was still alive in the oak tree.
24 While David was sitting between the
inner and outer gates, the watchman went up to the roof of the gateway by the
wall. As he looked out, he saw a man running alone. 25 The
watchman called out to the king and reported it.
The king said, “If he is alone, he must have good news.”
And the runner came closer and closer.
30 The king said, “Stand aside and wait
here.” So he stepped aside and stood there.
31 Then the Cushite arrived and said, “My
lord the king, hear the good news! The Lord has
vindicated you today by delivering you from the hand of all who rose up against
you.”
32 The king asked the Cushite, “Is the
young man Absalom safe?”
The Cushite replied, “May the enemies of my lord the king
and all who rise up to harm you be like that young man.”
33 The king was shaken. He went up to the
room over the gateway and wept. As he went, he said: “O my son Absalom! My son,
my son Absalom! If only I had died instead of you—O Absalom, my son, my son!”
19 Joab was told, “The king is
weeping and mourning for Absalom.” 2 And for the whole army
the victory that day was turned into mourning, because on that day the troops
heard it said, “The king is grieving for his son.” 3 The
men stole into the city that day as men steal in who are ashamed when they flee
from battle.
Psalm 86:1-6
A prayer of David.
1 Hear me, Lord, and answer me,
for I am poor and needy.
2 Guard my life, for I am faithful to you;
save your servant who trusts in you.
You are my God; 3 have mercy on me, Lord,
for I call to you all day long.
4 Bring joy to your servant, Lord,
for I put my trust in you.
for I am poor and needy.
2 Guard my life, for I am faithful to you;
save your servant who trusts in you.
You are my God; 3 have mercy on me, Lord,
for I call to you all day long.
4 Bring joy to your servant, Lord,
for I put my trust in you.
5 You, Lord, are
forgiving and good,
abounding in love to all who call to you.
6 Hear my prayer, Lord;
listen to my cry for mercy.
abounding in love to all who call to you.
6 Hear my prayer, Lord;
listen to my cry for mercy.
Mark 5:21-43
Jesus Raises a Dead Girl and Heals a Sick Woman
21 When Jesus had again crossed over by
boat to the other side of the lake, a large crowd gathered around him while he
was by the lake. 22 Then one of the
synagogue leaders, named Jairus, came, and when he saw Jesus, he fell at his
feet. 23 He pleaded earnestly with him,
“My little daughter is dying. Please come and put your hands on her so that she
will be healed and live.” 24 So Jesus
went with him.
A large crowd followed and pressed around him. 25 And a woman was there who had been subject to
bleeding for twelve years. 26 She had
suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had,
yet instead of getting better she grew worse. 27 When
she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his
cloak, 28 because she thought, “If I
just touch his clothes, I will be healed.” 29 Immediately
her bleeding stopped and she felt in her body that she was freed from her
suffering.
30 At once Jesus realized that power had
gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd and asked, “Who touched my clothes?”
31 “You see the people crowding against
you,” his disciples answered, “and yet you can ask, ‘Who
touched me?’ ”
32 But Jesus kept looking around to see who
had done it. 33 Then the woman, knowing
what had happened to her, came and fell at his feet and, trembling with fear,
told him the whole truth. 34 He said to
her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace
and be freed from your suffering.”
35 While Jesus was still speaking, some
people came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue leader. “Your daughter is
dead,” they said. “Why bother the teacher anymore?”
36 Overhearing what they said, Jesus told
him, “Don’t be afraid; just believe.”
37 He did not let anyone follow him except
Peter, James and John the brother of James. 38 When
they came to the home of the synagogue leader, Jesus saw a commotion, with
people crying and wailing loudly. 39 He
went in and said to them, “Why all this commotion and
wailing? The child is not dead but asleep.” 40 But
they laughed at him.
After he put them all out, he took the child’s father and
mother and the disciples who were with him, and went in where the child was.
41 He took her by the hand and said to her, “Talitha koum!” (which means “Little girl, I say to you, get up!”).
42 Immediately the girl stood up and began to
walk around (she was twelve years old). At this they were completely
astonished. 43 He gave strict orders
not to let anyone know about this, and told them to give her something to eat.
What prayer could be more true before God the Father than that which the
Son, who is Truth, uttered with His own lips?
